Program #1 Youths between the age of 10-20 yrs. are provided with 1 1/2 hours of instruction and games each week. Victoria Curling Club-owned equipment is provided for the use of the curlers during the 20-week season. Boys and girls are taught how to correctly deliver a curling rock; understand the strategy of the game; understand the importance of good sportsmanship and the etiquette of the sport as well as the value of being part of a team. Appropriate instruction is offered at each level of development, i.e. novice, intermediate, advanced, with adult coaches ultimately being recruited for those teams reaching a competitive level. The Junior Program includes curlers ranging from 10 yrs. old, just learning how to throw a curling rock, to highly skilled 16-20 year olds competing at provincial and national levels. Program Activities In addition to an instructor, there are usually 7-10 adult volunteers on the ice each session to help the curlers learn the skills required to improve their level of play as well as ensure their safety and enjoyment. The Junior Program presents a “bring a friend day” so other youngsters can try out a sport new to them. The social side of the sport is experienced by the curlers during the Christmas Party and wind-up dinner provided by the Curling Club. The curlers are encouraged to play on a variety of teams and sign up for junior bonspiels held in other curling clubs, locally and out of town. Victoria Curling Club hosts a two-day junior bonspiel each December which usually draws the maximum 16 teams. In order to provide balanced competition, teams participating in this spiel and most other junior spiels must be comprised of at least two novice players. Program #2 The School Program is an opportunity for school aged children to be exposed to learn the skills of and participate in the sport of curling.
