VICTORIA
CURLING CLUB NEWSLETTER Apr.
2008
PRESIDENT’S
REPORT
Another
curling season has come and gone as we look forward to spring and summer
activities. March is always a busy
month for the Victoria Curling Club with the end of the Ladies Daffodil Bonspiel
taking place and the Men’s Thunderbird Bonspiel in the middle of the month as
well as banquets for the various leagues. Both the Daffodil and Thunderbird
bonspiels were successful, thanks to Lorna Taylor and Dave Mueller and the large
support of volunteers organizing such events.
Well done to all of you.
I want to thank Bill Chester and his staff for a job well done.
A lot of work takes place behind the scene to ensure the success of these
bonspiels, from ensuring enough supplies for the bar to working with Janie in
the cafeteria for the banquets. We
sometimes take this extra effort for granted but I want to personally
acknowledge the fine work done by both the office staff, bar staff, ice staff
and food service staff in making the 2007 – 2008 curling season the success it
was.
Our gaming application for a capital project grant towards the purchase of a
new chiller was approved. We will be
receiving $19,904.00 (half the cost of a new chiller) as requested which will
allow us to proceed with the purchase of a new chiller in time for the upcoming
curling season in September 2008. The
General Manager will be determining the logistics of the purchase and
coordinating installation in time for next year’s curling season.
Our existing chiller is 18 years old and needed to be replaced in order
to ensure that we have do not have any problems with the ice for the upcoming
curling season.
George Bombezin and I attended a meeting with Saanich Council on April 1st
with
Keith Dagg
and his committee seeking support of Saanich Council for a grant towards
funding a Regional Curling Facility Feasibility Study.
To date, we have not been advised whether our grant application has been
approved or not.
There is much to do in preparation for the upcoming curling season and the role
of the Victoria Curling Club in the 2009 Scotties Tournament of Hearts.
We will be reviewing what improvements can be made in the appearance of
our curling club in anticipation of the upcoming curling season.
In order to accommodate the 2009 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, curling
will be commencing a week earlier than normal in September.
The Board of Directors looks forward to seeing all of you at the Annual General
Meeting in early September 2008! Have
a great summer.
Bud
Harbidge - President
MANAGER’S MESSAGE
As
I change focus now from curling to our summer rentals program, I can see that
our club has remained club central as far as curling goes. The phone here rings
off the hook each week with questions like, what time do I play tonight, can I
register our team for the bonspiel, how can I get tickets to Bear Mountain, how
do I sign up for volunteering for the Scotties, is TSN covering the Men’s
Worlds this year, and best yet “Are my seats going to be close to the
bathrooms?” So it’s obvious that Anita does more than just collect dues!
Congratulations to all teams that progressed through to their Provincial
Championships this year. Well done! Our club President Bud has now been through
a full season at the helm. Has anybody seen Georges lately? Next season will be
starting a bit earlier than usual due to us hosting the Heart Stop Lounge and
the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. This will be the only extra event of the
2008/09 season so that regular curling will not be interrupted any further other
than our usual club bonspiels. To date we have 5 concerts in the books for the
summer, so give us a call or check out the website for listings. I would like to
thank all of our volunteers and staff for their hard work this year and I look
forward to next year’s events already. Finally, remember the Golf Tournament
May 4, AGM in early Sept. and LEAGUE RECRUITMENT ALL SUMMER LONG!

mornings
The
Saturday
AM Curling League is an open, relatively unstructured mixed league for
men and women, playing any position, in any combination. Players range from
novice to experienced, with the objective of having fun on Saturday morning.
We are doing this by keeping the whole league as a casual place to curl
and enjoy the fellowship the game offers.
The AGM for the League was held on March 8th.

TEACHER’S LEAGUE
The
Teachers League wind up playoff evening and banquet for 2008 was held on
March 7. It was the culmination of a very good year involving 14 teams and
a number of spares whose faces we are starting to appreciate as regulars. The
league winners for the curling season was the Colin Coughlin team with Joy
Coughlin, Carlene Thompson and Keith Malcolm. The playoff A division trophy went
to the Geoff Davis team with Sue McArthur, Tanner Davis and Sue Harrison.
Second place went to the MaryLynne Rimer team with Dennis Ramsey and John and
Sherrilyn Plantinga. Third place went to the Terry Weegar Team with Bonnie
Light, David Smith and Donna. The B division trophy went to the
Neil Campbell
rink with Aileen and Barry Conway and Keith Perley. Second place went to the
Arnold Vanklaveren rink with Bruce Bell, Janet Vanklaveren and
Kirby Rimer
.
Third Place
went to the Russ Cozens rink with
Heather Cozens
, Christie Pollard and David Reynolds.
The
evening was a wonderful time of great food, refreshments and prizes. A
special presentation was made to Doug Wright of the Cec Drummond Sportsmanship
trophy for all his years of hard work on the Executive and behind the scenes
dedication to our league.
A
few weeks prior to the end of the season a funspiel was held on a Saturday
afternoon and evening that involved almost one hundred curlers many of whom were
newcomers to the sport. The funspiel consisted of a number of ends of fun
curling where all rocks in the house counted. The evening then involved a
great banquet and a dance that went into the early hours. Our very own
David P. Smith and his band provided a great evening of music and our thanks go
out to him and the band for their lively contribution to the evening.
The
funspiel will in all likelyhood provide the league with some new members for the
2008-09 season. We are looking forward to a new look complete with our own name
tags being designed and ordered by Rick Higgens.
Next
year’s Executive was voted in at the wind up as follows:

SPORTSMAN
Saturday March 29th brought an
end to Sportsman League curling for the 2007/2008 season with the league wrap-up
banquet scheduled for Saturday April 5th. The league round
robin champ this year was the
Barry Hilton
rink. This year’s playoff format saw the
Greg Corbett
rink win the (A) event, Dennis Omelchenko the (B) event, and Terry Walker the
(C) event. The Sportsman League “Challenge” carried out between the
Victoria
and Esquimalt curling clubs saw
Esquimalt
take the cup for the second year in a row.
The Sportsman league said goodbye in 2008
to two of its long-time members Gordy Schoor and Ron Smith who were taken from
us much too young in life. While not active curlers with the league
presently, both members played important roles in the league in terms of
organizing the charitable work the league carried out and as part of the league
executive. The league wrap-up banquet takes place in April this year and thanks
go to league members
Mark Mackereth
and
Greg Corbett
for their efforts in putting a great meal together along with the best prize
table of any club league. This event caps off a very enjoyable and fun
year for the league membership as this curling season saw the league grow by two
teams along with an influx of several new players. For next season,
curling begins in September and we hope to add two more teams to our league to
bring membership to a full 16 teams with 8 active sheets. For more
information regarding the CFAX Sportsman League and curling for next season
please contact League President
Dan Holland
@ 744-4465, or the league recruitment group of Al Hood @ 474-7872,
and/or Jerry Froese @ 383-0788.
FRIDAY

Basically, our league is great. Now
we have the entire summer to think about how we are going to outdo ourselves

SPORTS
TRADERS
March
16th was the season's final night of curling which ended with another
yummy banquet thanks to Janie Profitt & her crew. This
year's playoff champions were the Keith Kresse team, who enjoyed claiming
back their title from the Lois Richmond team who had stole
it from them last year. The Lois Richmond team had to settle as A event
runner ups, but enjoyed claiming back their title as round robin champions from none
other than the Keith Kresse team. The Gerry Auger team, being the
only Auger team to win a trophy, was thrilled to win the B event and the
Doug Schiedel team was excited to finish up as the B event runner ups.
Special thanks to Al and Karen Mellett for all of the hard work that went
into our windup party & for being willing to take it on again next year for
the 11th time in a row. They once again put together a great prize
table for the league & many great 50/50 prizes. Curling will
most likely be starting up again on September 28th. When the time
draws near, check out the Sports Trader's website for details: www.sportstraders.ca.
Hope to see you all back again next year.

The
planning stage for the
Victoria
’s Scotties Tournament of Hearts is well underway and with just more than 300
days to go, this off-season will be filled with hearts and minds continuing to
prepare for the event that will overtake our city in February 2009.
I am so pleased with the efforts of all the Vice Chairs and their
respective Directors: their commitment and dedication towards the success of
this event is truly inspiring and I can’t possible thank them enough.
The
call for volunteers commenced on February 20th and the target of 500
is fast approaching. Any individuals who are keen to get involved are asked to
apply online at: www.seasonofchampions.ca
and follow the link to the
Victoria
’09 Bound for Glory website.
Full Event Passes are now on sale and they are a hot commodity. I was cutting
my lawn last weekend when I was interrupted by a very nice couple from
Hanover
,
Ontario
who were making their plans to escape the eastern deep freeze next year. I
invited them to participate in
Victoria
’s Annual Flower Count during our ‘09 event. When we hung up they were
heading out to snow blow – again, and I finished mowing the lawn.
Tickets are available at www.selectyourtickets.com
or by calling 220-7777. The folks from
Hanover
were planning on the Silver Section!
Team Jones of Manitoba, now Team
Canada
, is our one team to date and we will be hosting her World Championship Team in
the fall. Skip Jennifer Jones, third Cathy Overton-Clapham, second Jill Officer
and lead Dawn Askin will be in
Victoria
on a date yet to be determined to help promote the 2009 Scotties and provide
some on-ice instruction for some lucky junior curlers!
I want to conclude by thanking the Victoria Curling Club and its outstanding
membership. The HeartStop Lounge
will be THE place to be during the event. Filled with passionate Canadian
curling fans from coast to coast, the HeartStop Lounge will offer the
opportunity for fans to meet, renew old friendships, get close to the
competitors, and be thoroughly entertained by the professional acts that will be
staged throughout the week. Without
the Victoria Curling Club, the 2009 Scotties would be nowhere near the event we
can now plan for it to be!

JUNIORS
The
fun is over for another season. We had a wonderful time of it though – with
our Halloween party, Christmas festivities, five area bonspiels and our Curling
in the Dark windup event. We also saw great successes this past season: Joel
Cave’s team of Junior Men won a berth to the Provincial Playdowns in Port
Alberni, the Josh Hozack Juvenile Men’s’ team earned a berth to the BC
Winter Games and brought home silver medals, two of our curlers, Ian Hardy and
Brandi Tinkler
, skipped teams in
Mike
Wood
’s High School League for first (Ian’s team from Stelly’s) and third
(Brandi’s team from Reynolds) place finishes. The Hozack team also earned one
of the four available spots to compete at the Bear Mountain Curling Classic in
the Junior Division.
Within
the program, we saw our athletes earning their Skill Awards badges: Reanne and
Alycia Streifel, Brooke Capron, Bailey Tinkler, Melissa Mackereth, Nolan Reid,
Emily Dagg and Alex Horvath all earned Red level badges and James Hollinger,
Brandi Tinkler
, Carley Sandwith, Nolan Reid and Alex Horvath earned Blue level badges.
Congratulations kids!!
High
fives to our fantastic volunteer coaches and thanks to the many who participated
in the coaching programs offered by
Curl
BC
, helping to make our Junior Program the best coached in the district! Ann
Thompson, Bonnie Davies, Cathryn O’Brien,
Ed Gerhardt
, Heather Sandwith, Linda Finlayson, Len Stewart, Myrna Beggs, Rich Thierbach,
Steve Beggs, and Steve Streifel – thank you so much. Thanks also to
Joel
Cave
, Tyler O’Brien and Corey Chester, who helped out on many occasions.
The curlers in our program benefit from the Island Farms UPC labels donated –
thanks to all who have taken the time to cut them out and drop them off at the
curling club.
The season has gone by so quickly, I can’t believe it’s over! Nothing to do
but start planning for a new beginning in September, and we are looking forward
to another great year.
Enjoy
a safe summer and see you in September.

MEN’S
THUNDERBIRD SPIEL
The 56th annual Thunderbird Men's Bonspiel was
successfully contended by a rambunctious 58 teams this year.
Congratulations go out to the Jason Montgomery rink, who took home four iPods

another bang-up job, the staff of the Victoria Curling Club for all of their
hard work, and to all of the sponsors (we couldn't do what we do without
you). Event/key sponsors included: Irvin Industries, Admirals Walk
Pet Clinic, McCall Bros. Funeral Directors, New York Fries, Sports Traders,
